Live chat
Live chat that lands in your inbox
Add a chat to your website with one line of HTML. Every conversation is a thread in your Smailor shared inbox, next to your email. Answer it from the web app, from Discord, or let it reach the visitor by email once they have left.
Included on every paid plan. No per-seat or per-conversation fee.

How it works
- 1
Paste one line on your site
A single script tag. It picks up your colors and texts from Smailor, and each page can override them, for example to speak French on your French pages.
- 2
Each chat becomes a thread
The first message goes through the same pipeline as an email: routing rules, groups, AI triage and contacts. Later messages join the same thread, live.
- 3
Answer from where you already work
Reply in the Smailor inbox, or type in the ticket thread on Discord. If the visitor has left, your answer reaches them by email and their reply comes back into the chat.
One conversation, wherever your team is
Most chat tools add another inbox to watch. Here the chat is part of the inbox you already use, so nothing is split between tools and nothing gets missed.
Your website
The visitor chats in a light widget that works on mobile and with a keyboard, and never clashes with your CSS.
Smailor inbox
The chat is a thread like any email: assign it, add notes, resolve it. You see when the visitor is typing and whether they are still on the page.
Discord
Visitor messages are posted in the ticket thread. Linked teammates answer by typing there; a message starting with // stays an internal note.
A reply to a visitor who left the page is also emailed to them. Their email answer lands in the same thread and shows up in the chat.
What you get
-
A waiting line, not a buried inbox
Cap how many chats your team holds at once, or how many per agent online. Visitors past the cap see their place in line, and nobody is dropped.
-
Typing indicators, both ways
The visitor sees when you write; you see when they do.
-
Visitor context
The page they are on, where they came from, and any data your site passes (plan, user id, order).
-
Your rules still apply
Groups, routing rules and AI triage treat a chat exactly like an email.
-
Your look, your language
Colors, position, theme and every built-in text, set in Smailor or per page.
-
Identity verification
Signed-in users of your app chat as themselves, signed with an HMAC from your server.
-
A key that cannot leak your inbox
The embed key can only deliver into one address, and only from the websites you allow.
-
No visible change for owners
No new dashboard to learn. A chat is a thread in the inbox you already use.
-
EU data residency
Conversations are stored with your email, on Hetzner servers in Germany and Finland.
Install in a minute, or build your own
Paste the tag and you are done. When you want more, the widget has a JavaScript API to identify signed-in users, pass context and open it from your own button. Under it sits a public HTTP API with Server-Sent Events, so you can build a fully custom chat in React, Vue or a mobile app on the same inbox.
Give the AI-ready reference to your coding assistant and ask it to build the chat you have in mind.
<script src="https://smailor.com/widget/chat.js" data-widget="wk_your_key" async></script>What it does not do
- No chatbot. Every answer comes from a person on your team.
- Visitors cannot upload files in the chat. Your team can send files, which go by email.
- No knowledge base or in-app messaging. It is a live chat, connected to your inbox.
- Available on paid plans, from Solo. The Free plan does not include widgets.
Questions
How is this different from Intercom, Crisp or tawk.to?
Those are chat tools that add an inbox. Smailor is a shared inbox that adds a chat: the conversation is a thread next to your email, with the same rules, assignments and history, and you can answer it from Discord or by email. There is no separate chat dashboard and no per-seat price.
What happens when nobody is online?
The widget shows your away message and the visitor can still write. Their message waits in your inbox like an email. When you answer, they see it in the chat if they are still on the page, and receive it by email otherwise.
What if more visitors write than my team can handle?
Set a limit in the widget settings: a fixed number of chats at once, or a number per agent who has Smailor open. A visitor past the limit joins a waiting line, sees their place, and reaches your inbox only when a slot frees up. A chat nobody has written in for a while gives its slot back, and a visitor who waits too long or leaves keeps their message, which you answer later like an email.
Can my team answer from Discord?
Yes. If the address or group of the chat is linked to a Discord channel, the chat gets a ticket card and a thread. Visitor messages are posted there, and any linked teammate with access to the group can reply by typing in the thread. Messages starting with // become internal notes.
How do I install it?
Create a live chat in Settings > Widgets > Live chat, then paste the script tag it gives you before the closing body tag of your pages. No build step and no dependency. WordPress, Webflow, Shopify and static sites all accept a script tag.
Can I build my own chat interface?
Yes. The widget has a JavaScript API (open, identify, metadata, events) and runs on a public HTTP API with Server-Sent Events. You can build a fully custom chat in React, Vue or a mobile app with the same inbox behind it. The developer guide and an AI-ready reference are linked on this page.
Which plans include live chat?
Live chat is included on every paid plan (Solo, Starter, Pro and Business), with no per-seat or per-conversation fee. The Free plan does not include website widgets.
